Extension Cord Size & Safety Calculator
Find the safe extension-cord gauge (AWG) for running an appliance a given distance from your generator, and the max safe length for a cord you already own.
🇺🇸 US AWG wire gauges, 120 V default, 3% voltage-drop limit.

Based on copper-conductor voltage drop (kept under 3%) plus an 80% continuous-load ampacity margin — the safe, conservative side. Real-world safety also depends on the cord's condition, its own marked rating, outdoor temperature, and whether it's coiled (a coiled cord under load can overheat even at the right gauge — always uncoil it fully). This is planning guidance, not a substitute for following the cord's listed ratings or consulting an electrician. Never exceed the cord's or generator outlet's rated amperage.
